The Book of Ezekiel deals with Babylonian exile in a unique way: It invokes symbolism of rites of passage (van Gennep/Turner) to depict exile as a necessary liminal phase of a process that transforms Israel to its renewed status as God's people. In reading the Book of Ezekiel, the process can be followed performatively. The study combines Old Testament scholarship with spatial and ritual theory.
