‘Beautifully disrupted’ was I as I took in this thoughtfully written account of the life of Mary Magdalene & the ordinary, yet the extraordinary way she followed Christ. While It Was Still Dark so wonderfully lays out the call to actively seek after Christ through His life, death & resurrection as a Christian woman today. Joelle, the author, captivated & drew me in as I read her candid stories, the humility she displays in her delivery, and her obvious understanding of God’s word. I would highly recommend this book to any woman today looking for clarity, encouragement, edification, or simply a challenge to search deeper with Christ on how to lean into the difficulties of life trusting in God’s greater plan. While It Was Still Dark is a beautiful gospel-soaked read. Through a retelling of Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection, I experienced newfound joy in the gospel and my call to follow Christ. Joelle traces the life of Mary Magdalene and other individuals from the Bible to show us what a life devoted to Christ should look like. I found myself convicted at many different points as Joelle discussed what it looks like to step out of my comfort zone and live-in joyful obedience and submission- a true challenge to our current cultural conceptions! Through both light-hearted and difficult personal stories, I found her to be honest about her own struggles while still calling fellow women to a bold faith. Joelle’s heart clear-ly pours off of these pages. Her love for Jesus and desire for all to share that love is at the foundation of this book.
