In 2018, the Episcopal Church approved new model policies (to be implemented by January 2019) for protection of children, youth, and vulnerable adults. This book offers the history of such polices in the Episcopal Church and why it is important for churches and its ministries to create safe and welcoming space for minors, elders, and people with disabilities and those engaged in ministry with them. Both new policies, (1) Children and Youth and (2) Vulnerable Adults, are included in entirety, with the addition of a comprehensive index to assist in implementation and education of those expected to adhere to these policies, such as clergy, staff, and volunteers. Updates included reflect such contemporary concerns as social media, mission trips, pilgrimages, camps and confer-ence center programs, and other overnight events, as well as experiences of LGBTQ+ and non-binary persons.
Contains concise statements of theological and ethical foundations for safe church practices; useful definitions; behavioral standards to ensure all persons are treated with dignity and respect; standards for screening, training, and monitoring for those who work with these populations; expectations for policy implementation; and guidelines for the use of social media and electronic communication. With an index, topics and standards will be easily found for implementation.
