The Anarchist Dimension of Liberation Theology

  • By Linda H. Damico
$25.00
Product Description
Description: While other studies of liberation theology have shown a close connection to Marxism, none have probed its anarchistic dimensions. This original study reveals that in many of the most prominent themes of Latin American liberation theology there are close parallels to the ideas found in nineteenth-century European anarchism. These themes include an ethical concern with freedom, justice, equality, and love; a denunciation of political and economic structures of domination; an emphasis on action; a championing of all oppressed peoples; a realistic consideration of the issue of violence; and the vision of a future free from servitude. These common concerns, along with historical connections to both religious and secular anarchist sources, show a revolutionary theology deeply indebted to its anarchist roots. Endorsements: ""This is the first work to disclose important anarchist sources in the development of liberation theology. In addition to this original and important contribution to our understanding of liberation theology, Professor Damico has provided the best analysis available of the mass basis of the great transformation that is taking place to our south. Here is captured the interior or qualitative dimension of revolution which is absent from other studies of this kind. The book is superbly researched and written."" --Willis H. Truitt, Department of Philosophy, University of South Florida ""Professor Damico's study calls for a changed assessment of both the communist content of liberation theology and its anarchist seeds in Marx and Lenin."" --Donald C. Hodges, Professor of Philosophy, Florida State University About the Contributor(s): Linda Damico was an associate professor of philosophy at Kennesaw State University in Kennesaw, Georgia. She is now retired and living in Gainesville, Florida, where she devotes her time to political activism, hiking, and nature photography.
