Viola Martin was a letter carrier who had pressed through snow and sleet, rain and scorching heat to deliver what was, to her, precious mail. She had seen much in her 50 years as a postal worker and shared in both the triumphs and tragedies of those on her mail route.
As the touching story unfolds, Viola enters an unexpected friendship with Jimmy, her inquisitive and compassionate grandson whose family recently moved back into town. Viola thinks her useful days are over, but she doesn't count on Jimmy's regular visits, which challenge her to reach out beyond herself. When one of Jimmy's schoolmates loses her home in a devastating fire, Viola's anonymous act of generosity saves his friend's Christmas and convinces Jimmy that she is indeed his hero.
