Joshua Nash is a shy but confident twelve-year-old boy who never knew his mother. He has never had a real home because he has wandered from town to town his entire life with his abusive and alcoholic father. Joshua's childhood is a very unhappy one.
Ruth Biggs is a cheerful seven-year-old girl from a small town called Forest Happy. Raised by Christian parents, Ruth is surrounded by a loving family, and her childhood is one free from pain until Joshua and his father arrive.
