Product Description
The Redemption of Scrooge, from Matt Rawle’s The Pop in Culture Series, shows us how the teachings of Jesus can be found in Dickens’ Christmas classic. From the ghosts of Christmas past, to the Life of the present, and the resurrection of Christmas future, this Advent study will “bless us every one” and reinvigorate our spiritual journeys as we look at this familiar story through the lens of faith.

For use during the group sessions, these videos feature Matt Rawle teaching in his friendly, casual, appealing style.

In Session 1, Matt Rawle introduces Scrooge, “a sad, sad man.” But don’t worry—if Scrooge can be redeemed, so can we. In A Christmas Carol and in Jesus’ parable of the landowner, we learn that it’s not the wage that is our reward; it’s having a God who will never stop offering us an invitation to be in the Kingdom.

In Session 2, Scrooge remembers a happier time in his life, and Matt Rawle sees in it the possibility that Scrooge, like all of us, can change. Advent is all about change and redemption. It’s about joy entering the world—joy, the steadfast assurance that God is with us.

In Session 3, Matt Rawle points out that in the story of Scrooge, the ghost of Christmas Past gives way to the ghost of Christmas present. Similarly, the Christmas story starts in the past with “In those days,” but moves to a glorious present when the angels proclaim, “To you is born on this day in the city of David, a savior who is the messiah, the Lord.”

In Session 4, We discover darkness in the life of Scrooge before he was redeemed, and darkness also plays a role in Jesus’ birth, death, and resurrection. Both stories remind us that the Christian faith is not about avoiding the darkness; rather we are called to shine in the midst of it.
