Spiritual Leadership in a Secular Age is designed to coach leaders through an assessment of their current leadership strategies and methods in light of biblical principles and proven strategies that build bridges rather than barriers in a post modern culture.
Its author, Edward Hammett, sees the church as focused on itself but needing to reach out to people quite different from its membership. Church as it is repels outsiders, building barriers that dare them to enter and enjoy church.
From long practical experience and deep pastoral love, Hammett sketches various ways the church can reach out to people outside the church. He offers a plan church leaders can use to offer secular citizens a way to discuss their spiritual needs outside the confines of the church and without committing to the institutional church before they find the help they need. In so doing he recommends a new strategy of coaching to help church leaders find answers to their individual problems rather than forcing leaders to take a consultant’s pre-designed plan and force fit it to the local church.
