Liberating Our Dignity,Saving our Soul's is a study of African American identity aimed at pointing a way out of a current crisis into a new liberation and salvation. Butler combines insights and methodologies from development psychology, liberation theology and African and African American history to plot a new course for contemporary African Americans to gain a sense of identity that will guide them away form the identity the European and American cultures have traditionally forced upon them.This involves determining identity by personal growth, not by occupations, economic class, or social class. Butler focuses on the distinctive process in which African American identity forms within American life. Looking from the past and into the Butler, he addresses five basic elements of African American identity: formation, racial, gender, religious, and liberation. Butler reviews many of the liberation disciplines of African America. He concludes with a synthesis of African and African American cultural history and development, African and African American religious history, black and womanist theologies and ethics, African and African American psychologies of childhood and adulthood in education and society into a framework for understanding African American conscious and unconscious psychic processes.
