While there are a number of helpful books, both trade and academic, published into the area of spiritual formation, the leading ones by Ortberg, Crabb, Foster, Willard et al. all treat the discipline on an individual level. Jim Wilhoit argues for the missing piece, accenting how formation can be fostered through Christian community.
This book offers an introduction to spiritual formation which is set squarely in the local church. Wilhoit makes his case by offering a balanced, accessible book marked by short chapters, plentiful side bar material, and concluding prayers. In addition, the use of metaphors like " home" and "journey" throughout the book will communicate his foundational ideas in compelling, experiential, and life-application terms.
