Look at this gentle, expressive interpretation of 1 Corinthians 13. From the beginning, the Holy Spirit is asked to be present, blessing worship and all who are gathered. Unison women open the anthem, joined by unison men in harmony against the melodic line. Four-part writing fills out the texture at measure 21 referencing faith, hope, and love. The melody trades off between men and women beginning at measure 31. A shift from E-flat major into F major raises the key, with text focused on care for others. The “faith, hope, and love” refrain returns in measure 47 to round out the anthem.
The accompaniment fully supports the voices, adding ornamentation through written turns, arpeggios, and brief scale passages. The vocal parts are suited to each type with no unusual rhythms or harmonies. This is fully accessible to mixed adult ensembles.
Performance options include singing the first section as a solo followed by a duet at measure 12. Tutti choir may enter at the refrain in measure 20. This may be sung as an introit or independent anthem. For use in a wedding, several options may be appropriate: after the seating of the mothers; after the welcome; or after the statement of intent.
Appropriate days: Use of 1 Corinthians 13; service themes on love; wedding ceremony; and general worship.
