Text on back:
Here before you is a picture of potential. The potential is not yet realized, but what wonderful possibilities there are! The potential, always present, is for true peace on earth. The globe, representing our world, catches light from two sources, a candle and a Bible. Which of these will provide illumination that can make peace possible?
The candle portrays the light of knowledge and understanding. Peace can never come until there is an openness to understand how life's values are seen differently by the world's great variety of people. Empathy, being able to walk in someone else's shoes, brings the kind of understanding that leads to acceptance and caring.
The Bible represents the light of infinite wisdom, the experience of life's unity and wholeness. To our sight we need to add insight, a God-given awareness of the interdependence of all parts of creation. Even the environment, the land, the seas, the skies are part of one created whole that embodies an inherent unity and harmony.
World peace will come when our reasoned understanding and our inner awareness combine to make us all feel restless until harmony is found. Advent is a time for reflection and study, working toward that inner peace and harmony.
Your Advent offering can be a daily reminder of your task. In response to God's coming to us in Jesus Christ, present your gift and yourself to God, that the world may come to know God's abiding, sustaining peace.
