One Palm Sunday, when I was little, the church ushers handed out small crosses made of palm leaves to everyone assembling for worship. The crosses were green and soft, except for the presence of a staple right in the middle to hold the two pieces of palm leaf together. I remember sitting in the great worship celebration, feeling the hard, sharp-edged metal of the staple against the green leaves, even while hosannas rang around me. I was old enough to know the whole story. From a day filled with hope and joy, the week would progress to a day of apparent hopelessness when a sharp-edged nail would pierce a soft human wrist and lodge in the wood of a cross.

How quickly events can move from joy to tragedy. As faithful persons, how do we learn to lean on God’s promise of deliverance when we are buffeted by painful feelings?
