What is necessary for us to be able to believe something? Do we need to hear it? Do we need to see it? Do we need to experience it? In a day of competing news broadcasts and newspapers, each with its own “spin” on the news, we are sometimes confused as to what really is and is not the truth.
Several years ago a “dark comedy” entitled Wag the Dog was released. It portrayed the ways in which technology enables people to “manufacture” news and to create and twist facts and situations to suit a preconceived idea. Most folks came out of Wag the Dog with a slightly uneasy feeling, wondering, “What can we really regard as the truth? Can we trust anything that we see or hear anymore?”
The questions this motion picture raises are not new. Our Bible Lesson demonstrates how people in the first century also struggled to determine what they could believe, what they could accept as factual. Might some of the suggestions presented in our Bible Lesson help us to determine what we can believe, not just in terms of the news, but in terms of the eternal matters of life?
