Our city suffered a severe ice storm several years ago that wiped out electrical power for thousands of homes, some for a number of days. Our first discovery with our loss of power was the degree to which our daily lives depended on electricity. The second discovery—one of long-term value—was a deepened sense of gratitude. As power was restored to one neighborhood after another over a period of days, a common sentence was repeated in hundreds of conversations: “I’ve never in my life been so thankful for our electricity!” For weeks afterward at our house, our evening prayers included thanks for our working electricity.
Sometimes it is not those who have “always had” faith who feel the deepest gratitude for God’s gift of eternal life in Jesus Christ. Sometimes it is those who have lived their lives apart from God but are suddenly “surprised by joy.” Two men in the little church where I grew up had been alcoholics. When those men stood up to testify to their faith, there was poignancy and power in their witness that moved me even as a boy. They seemed to know something about God’s grace that others did not; at least, they acted and talked as if they knew it much more deeply.
Eternal life is as great a gift to receive whether one is a hopeless addict or a routine soul. There is no real difference in our need for Christ, and surely there is no difference in the eternal life that God offers us.
