We are all philosophers when it comes to the question of our human value and our purpose in living. A pre-school child asks, “Why did God make me?”—that is, “What is my value?” Older adults in a nursing home raise the issue when someone is visiting: “I don’t know why God lets me live. I’m of no value to anyone.”

Asking this question does not have anything to do with one’s education or financial resources. The writer of Ecclesiastes seemed to have everything. Yet he cried,

Vanity of vanities! All is
vanity.
What do people gain from all
the toil
at which they toil under
the sun?
(Ecclesiastes 1:2-3)

This writer from long ago put the question poetically, but I have heard it asked by people standing in unemployment lines. We humans insist on having a sense of value. We do so because this is the way we were created. That is one of the things the Book of Genesis is trying to tell us.
