A coffee table for the family room would only be used to hold pop cans, pizza boxes, and big teenage feet in socks. Therefore, the quality we searched for when we went shopping for the table could be expressed in one word: bargain.
After visiting the two-hundred-dollar coffee table furniture stores, we decided to check at the local discount retailer for a “some assembly required” table. What luck! I discovered a coffee table for only fifteen dollars. I quickly made the purchase, proud of my skill in finding the bargain.
Actually, “bargain” is being kind. Frankly, it was cheap. Most persons would have called it “junk.” I assembled the table and told the boys that if they put anything heavy on it, like feet, or perhaps even a pillow, it would probably break. They promised to be careful.
I am not kidding when I tell you that I went upstairs and literally one hour later the boys came up, laughing hysterically and carrying two broken table legs. “We just moved it to straighten the rug, and snap!” Peals of laughter again. I guess it was worth the fifteen dollars just for the laughing it produced and the family story it created.
Without trying, our boys helped to define “integrity,” or the lack thereof, at least in terms of furniture construction. Today we will talk about three words—integrity, righteousness, and community—as we discern God’s call regarding how we are to live together.
