This Bible Lesson may seem familiar to you. If you have been in Sunday school and church most of your life, you have probably heard this passage many times. Perhaps you have also heard these words at a funeral or a memorial service. The United Methodist Book of Worship lists this passage as one of the primary Gospel Lessons to be read at Services of Death and Resurrection. This is as it should be; for the first three verses are words of comfort, hope, and promise to those who are grieving.
Our Bible Lesson contains more than just soothing words that we need to hear at funerals, however. This passage of Scripture contains words of challenge, words of promise, and even words of gentle rebuke. Unfortunately, some people have also used words from this passage to judge and even to exclude others from God’s love and care.
Read the Bible Lesson aloud. Let the sentences sink in, and feel within you what Thomas and Philip might have felt as they responded to Jesus’ words. What might they have experienced as Jesus addressed their concerns?
