Listen...to the words of the Scripture, and in them discover God's message for you today.
Look...at a brief verbal snapshot from the scrapbook of contemporary life and discover its connection both to you and to the Scripture passage.
Live...inside the Scripture to discover its context and message; then allow the Scripture to come alive in you and cause you to live out your faith in new and more-effective ways.

For a brief period after World War II, I worked with an organization that was sending aid to Greece, a country that had been devastated by the war. One day I received a letter from a person in a sanitarium there—an institution under-staffed and under-equipped, barely keeping its patients alive. The man described their barren life with eloquent simplicity: “Our lives are like a deserted church where no one ever stops to light a candle.”
That phrase has returned to my mind through the passing years as I have seen persons in the dark places of life. Some of these people have been in hospitals or nursing homes, but some have lived on apparently tranquil streets. Darkness is not limited to particular settings or predictable circumstances. Darkness can invade even the most attractive and unlikely areas.
It seems to me that the only characteristic that always makes for darkness is the absence of love. Yet having said this, I must speak a qualifying word. In some instances love may be present, but somehow a person’s state of darkness is so severe that he or she cannot recognize the presence of love or cannot receive it. Love is the essence of light, however; and where love comes, light comes with it and drives out darkness. We need to know how to live in, and to share, the light of God’s love.
