My older son, Steven, is now a senior in high school; and at the time of this writing we are in the midst of the college decision process. We recently attended a college visitation day at one of the universities that he is considering attending. The dean of the college gave the prospective students a very inspiring message. What struck me most about his message was this: He said that he did not care how smart the students were. He did not care about their SAT scores. He told the young people that their intelligence had not been achieved through any effort of their own, that being smart is basically a matter of genes. He told the young people that what he was interested in was whether they had a curious mind. He said there is a difference between being smart and being curious. The best thing, of course, is to be both.
Today’s lesson is not about the difference between being smart and being curious, but the principle of comparison is the same. For the church at Corinth, the issue was the difference between having knowledge and being a person who loves God and others. Just as being smart does not preclude being curious, so having knowledge does not preclude being a loving person. Again, the best thing is to be both. In our Bible Lesson, Paul affirmed the priority of Christian love over personal privilege.
