Vera says of her spouse of sixty years, “Bill hears what he wants to hear!” She feels frustrated but laughs it off, knowing that she cannot change him. He will listen only when what she says interests him or meets his needs. Have you ever tried talking to someone you know is not listening? Have you ever observed yourself hearing only what you want to hear?
Many of us want more out of life than our materialistic, stress-laden culture offers us. We want inner peace and direction. We search for a mature spirituality rooted in the Christian tradition, broad enough to embrace all people. Whether or not we recognize it, we are listening for God.
If we trust God, then when God speaks peace, we will be changed; and our faith will help change the world. When Paul wrote the words, “If you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved” (Romans 10:9), he pointed to the power of the gospel to redeem the world and everyone in it. That is news worth hearing!
