I am one of those people who have been blessed with a lifetime of good health. I have had an occasional sick day, but nothing that has caused me ongoing problems.
I wish the same were true for my wife. She was in an auto accident when she was eighteen. From that day to this, she has not known a day without physical pain. Various treatments and surgeries have sometimes helped ease the pain, but never has she been free from pain. Even so, she has borne three children, worked as a nurse, and participated in church mission projects overseas. She has never asked to be pitied.
Living with her, I have learned that suffering by itself does not make us better persons. In fact, it can crush our spirits; no one should ever seek suffering. Yet, suffering can also be used by God. My wife is much quicker than I am to notice when others are suffering and to respond to them with sympathy and encouragement.
