My hometown is Emlenton, Pennsylvania. When I was growing up, it became the site of the highest bridge east of the Mississippi River. That bridge is 1,668 feet long with 2 piers in each of 3 counties. We waited for years for what was known as “the big bridge” to be completed in 1968. It took millions of dollars and years of work by hundreds of people to build that great bridge, which so many persons take for granted as they drive over it. I still get a thrill when I cross it and look down at my hometown nestled against the hillside.
A better view can be had standing underneath the bridge, at the foundation, looking up 270 feet high into the air. When one views that massive steel and concrete structure held up by those huge piers sunk deep in the Allegheny River, one gets a sense of the importance of having a firm foundation. There can be no great bridges without strong foundations.
Our Bible Lesson is about building our lives and the church on the only real and lasting foundation there is: Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior.
