While this Bible Lesson takes us back to the events surrounding Jesus’ birth, it is not the traditional Christmas story from Luke or Matthew. It is not the story of dreams and travels, of censuses or inns. Nor is it the story of a virgin and a baby or of angels singing on the hillside. These details narrate the opening moments of the familiar Christmas story of the Incarnation, the life history of God in human form.

The history of the Incarnation goes beyond its historical details, however. There is also the theological meaning of the Incarnation, as well as questions about how the Incarnation creates or shapes our faith in God. How does God’s incarnation in Jesus change our relationship with God, with one another, and with the universe in which we live?

For answers, we would do well to turn to the Gospel According to John.
