When bad things happen, even faithful people are sometimes tempted to jump to the conclusion that it is the judgment of God. This is understandable. Because we believe in a holy God who desires that we live righteous and upright lives, judgment would seem to be a legitimate aspect of God’s dealings with humankind. At the same time, the very notion that God might be judgmental causes some persons to have feelings of resentment toward God.

From all appearances, God’s holiness had rendered God a destroyer to be feared. In the aftermath of the Flood, however, God made a covenant with Noah. It was the first of several covenants that God would establish with persons in the Bible: “Never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth” (Genesis 9:11).
