One million atom bombs. Over 31 billion tons of TNT. Although obviously estimates, this is more power than the combined arsenals of every armed force since the beginning of humankind. Yet this is the equivalent of the power released by the earthquake that created the December 2004 tsunami in the Indian Ocean. There was massive destruction of property and loss of livelihood for an entire region of the world. The saddest part of this event was the incredible loss of life. One single event of nature eclipsed anything that humans alone have ever done. In the end, one scientist called it an “adjustment” to the earth’s crust. Perhaps that is what it was, yet that “adjustment” moved the island of Sumatra one hundred feet to the southwest and sped up the earth’s rotation by three microseconds.
Events like the tsunami are often called “acts of God.” Yet the God we worship is far above and way beyond even this incredible display of nature’s power. Our work in this lesson is to study God’s creation through the words of Psalm 104. By doing so, we will be better able to celebrate its awesome majesty as an expression of God’s power.
