Our sons love compliments. Who doesn’t? They are especially pleased when their mother comments on how handsome they look. For a moment they become strutting peacocks. We have noticed that days later they will wear the same combination of clothes to school or elsewhere—not because they have any great fashion sense, but because they truly believe that once again they are “looking good.”
Let’s be careful as we read this Bible Lesson. The purpose of the psalm is not simply to find a way to “compliment” God. The psalmist is not telling God how “nice” God is. Instead, this psalm invites us to praise God. We do not praise God in order to make God “feel better” about who God is, as though that would be necessary or possible! Praising God opens doors in our own minds and hearts as we encounter a deeper and fuller understanding of just how “great” is the One who has created us and cares for us. Praise reveals God to us in a different way as we put into words what we have always known deep in our hearts about the mercy and the greatness of God.
