I am not a joiner. When someday a newspaper publishes my obituary, it will not need many lines to list the organizations in which I have held membership. Nevertheless, I love to belong; and where I have held membership, I have done so with pride and loyalty.

This desire to belong is almost as natural to human beings as the desire to stay alive. We are born into nature’s basic community, the family. If for some reason that community fails us, we may struggle most of our days to get over the loss. This is because the need to belong to a community is utterly instinctive. I believe it begins by our being nurtured in the womb of another.

Some people, however, choose to withdraw from the human race. A few do so physically; a great many more do so emotionally. But when we leave community, we are acting contrary to our humanness. When Genesis 2:18 portrays God as saying that it is not good for us to be alone, it is stating a principle that extends to more than marriage. You and I were meant to live in community.
