Two of my closest friends have died in the past year and a half. Both knew the time of death was near, and both were prepared and happy to make the move. They were confident they were going to heaven, and they saw it as home. Their faith in God and their years of Christian living made them at peace with the prospect of death and full of anticipation regarding their eternal future.

What will heaven be like? Henry David Thoreau must have had images of his beloved Walden Pond in mind when he remarked that he expected to find pine trees in heaven. Rudyard Kipling, whose writings won him a fair share of money and fame, saw heaven as a place where “no one shall work for money, and no one shall work for fame.”1 In my childhood, when few laboring people had paid vacations, someone titled a song “When I Take My Vacation in Heaven.” Some unknown, great soul in America’s days of slavery taught us to sing, “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot, coming for to carry me home.”

What can we expect in our promised, new home, heaven? What meaning shall we find in Revelation’s pictures of faith and hope?
