Amber grew up in and out of church. The daughter of a non-practicing Roman Catholic, Amber was baptized Roman Catholic and, for a time, attended parochial schools. During Amber’s teen years, her grandmother took her to Sunday school and confirmation classes in a United Methodist church. After confirmation, however, Amber rebelled and drifted away.

When she began planning her wedding, Amber wanted to be married in the local United Methodist church. Later, after her first son was born, she asked the United Methodist pastor to baptize her child. While she attended worship occasionally with her grandmother, Amber knew very little about what it means to rear a child in Christ’s holy church.

Amber was indignant when the pastor asked her if she intended to become an active member of the church. Even though she did not participate often, she felt she had a right to present her son for baptism. This would secure his place with God and absolve him of sin.

She expressed anger to both her grandmother and the pastor. While preparing for her son’s baptism, however, she discovered that the sacrament is no mere ritual act with durable powers to save sinners. Baptism signifies belonging to Christ. When believers worship and work together in mutual love, they demonstrate the inward change of heart that the outward act signifies.
