What makes an altar frontal different from an altar antependium? The frontal is made of one piece of material, example Cathedral fabric, and is designed to cover the total width of the altar with a shorter front drop. The antependium is designed to lay in the center of the altar. It is usually made of linen connected to another material like Cathedral fabric, but can be made of one single piece of material. This is known as an antependium with self-fabric depth. The linen portion covers the altar, while the other fabric hangs down in front and provides the adornment. The antependium has a longer drop to allow for a larger, bolder symbol.
