The practice of Christian baptism is rooted in the Old Testament. The use of water for ritual purification and washing anticipates the cleansing and forgiveness from sin which Christians associate with baptism. When early Christians were baptized in the name of Jesus they were being identified with him in his death and resurrection. This rite was seen as a sign and seal of God's covenant promises, now fulfilled in the death and resurrection of their Lord.
