This beloved nineteenth-century hymn is set in an easy-to-sing arrangement for your SATB choir. The beautiful Crosby text is autobiographical of her faithful spiritual walk. Imagery of the cross and God’s grace fill the poetry. A separate part for violin or flute is included in the score. The range and rhythms are easy enough for a high school player. The vocal parts are in a traditional hymn style.
Performance options include singing stanzas 1 and/or 2 as solos. The a cappella section may be doubled at the keyboard for additional support. The refrain may be used as a call to prayer.
Appropriate days: Service themes on the cross, mercy, healing, and commitment; services in Lent; and general worship.
