An eight-measure piano introduction brings a joyful lightness to the Psalm text, “God is our refuge and strength.” Each voice part states the opening text, joining unison in measure 13 to complete the psalmist’s proclamation, “We will not fear.” Accompaniment turns from flowing eighth notes to full voiced blocked chords. The accompaniment beautifully illustrates the tone of the psalmist. Skilled part writing allows for limited range, frequent unisons, and interesting rhythms. This is accessible to middle school through adult singers.
Performance options include singing the anthem as the Psalter lesson or act of praise in worship. The first and last sections may be extracted and used as shorter service music.
Appropriate days: Use of Psalm 46, service themes on refuge and safety in God, God’s sovereignty, and general worship.
