The turn of the century marked the opportunity for numerous beginnings, including the church’s hymnody. Daniel Damon approached this challenge with “Jesus, You Are the New Day.” Congregations will quickly learn this unison tune, which sits comfortably in A major. The refrain opens the hymn with three stanzas following. Themes include forgiveness, resurrection, and daily struggles.
The accompaniment is set in a traditional hymn format with the melody in the top voice and vertical sonority completing the chord structure. Guitar chords are included.
PERFORMANCE OPTIONS include introducing the refrain as a call to worship or as a psalm response. You may use this hymn as an anthem with the choir. Options: sing stanzas 1 and 3 tutti with stanza 2 as a solo; sing all stanzas as a solo; or sing all stanzas tutti. Guitar accompaniment alone is sufficient but may be paired with a keyboard instrument for a fuller sound.
APPROPRIATE DAYS: Watch Night service; worship services on renewal, forgiveness, resurrection, or daily struggles; services in Lent; or general worship.
