This festive anthem uses a relatively new hymn tune and text to march the church forward in mission and service. The fanfare opening sets the pace for the rhythmic energy and excitement that propels this anthem. Unison voices march into stanza 1 asking “who will lead” in these days of change. Stanza 2 divides into four parts as the text seeks “wider dreams” for a world divided. Unison men paired against women complete the stanza. A modulation moves into stanza 3, set a cappella, with divided voices. Accidentals and dissonances illustrate the unrest of “starving people, warring factions, and despair.” Harmony returns with “God,” our resolve. Another modulation moves into the next stanza set for unison men with women on “ah” above. Multiple key changes build the anticipation at “now and evermore” as the final stanza enters with congregation and choir. The anthem fills with joy as it rises to the final chord.
The accompaniment makes this anthem. Triplets intensify energy; brass offer brilliance; and the organ brings an orchestral gladness. Separate brass parts are available as a set for three trumpets, two trombones, and timpani. The piano part requires a skillful player and is well worth the effort. The hymn tune is accessible to the congregation. The key changes are clearly identified in the accompaniment. Vocal ranges are moderate.
PERFORMANCE OPTIONS include the use of organ or brass. The brass parts are available for downloading (Item No. 0687080045). The congregation’s part (stanza 5) is also available online (Item No. 0687076323).
