The celebration of communion draws us closer to God. Horman and Keithahn parallel this experience in “Circle the Table.” Each line of the text adds color and detail to the mural before us as we approach the table of our Lord. Stanza 1 invites all to the table; stanza 2 describes the elements and symbols of the table; and stanza 3 concludes by partaking and sending forth.
The 6/4 meter brings a gentle sway to the beautiful melody to suggest a processional either as the bread and cup are brought into the sanctuary or are they are distributed. The range is one octave resting comfortably in the middle of the voice. Keyboard accompaniment doubles the melody while completing the harmonic structure. Children, youth, and adults will enjoy learning this hymn.
PERFORMANCE OPTIONS include having the choir and/or congregation sing this during the distribution of the elements. An alternative is to teach stanza 1 to the children’s choir, stanza 2 to the adult choir, and all sing stanza 3.
APPROPRIATE DAYS include services with communion, especially World Communion Sunday.
