"Peace on earth." The words have graced millions of cards, prompted countless sermons, and have been uttered by many a homemade angel on a Sunday School Pageant stage. "Peace on earth" is the promise of Christmas. But is it a promise unfulfilled? As we consider the seemingly unbroken history of war on our planet, we might be compelled to agree. But Jesus Christ did not come to establish an earthly peace, but rather, a peace within each earthly heart, by reconciling us to our Heavenly Father. And this is the song of the Bethlehem angels. This is peace on earth.
The centerpiece of the musical is Robert Sterling’s elegant contemporary setting of Longfellow’s beloved "I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day," reminding us that "God is not dead nor does He sleep; The wrong shall fail and right prevail with peace on earth, good will to men."
