Gated communities. Our culture loves them. So do some churches…inward facing churches. Author Leonard Sweet says that if your church’s mission statement is based on how to get more people to come to church, you have an inward facing church. Outward facing churches? They don’t measure success by seating capacity, but by sending capacity. They understand that Christianity is not impervious to cultural influences and that tolerance is not a dirty word. Outward facing churches are today’s emerging churches—missional churches. They’re discovering that for things to remain the same they must change, and, in fact, that it takes a “we” to make a “me.”
