Church musician Steve O’Connor has arranged several hymn tunes with jazz harmonies. These simple arrangements could be used to accompany the hymn or to play as incidental music during communion or at other liturgical times when meditative music is needed.
Jazz is a decidedly American idiom and churches are beginning to incorporate the distinctive sounds into its hymnody. If your congregation has not learned to hear jazz as a sacred idiom, this is a great way to introduce them to it.
