Christmas (or Epiphany) anthem for SATB voices and keyboard; words by J. Paul Williams, alt.; music by Jim Ailor.
The title phrase fully describes the focus of this text—Christ, light of creation, light of salvation. The story addresses the Nativity, including the visit of the wise men as all are invited to kneel and worship the world’s true light. A bold introduction announces the theme, followed by unison women. Divisi gradually includes all voices. Textures vary for interest with the melody primarily in the top voice. Measure 94 juxtaposes a borrowed phrase from “O Come, All Ye Faithful” using an altered tune for the men as women continue with a previous melody. The closing phrase adds divisi, volume, and range for a grand finale.
The keyboard accompaniment defines the harmonic structure, adding rhythmic energy to the voices. Scale passages, mixed meter, clef changes, and key changes require a confident player. Vocal ranges are moderate until the final chord, which may be modified to fit your ensemble.
Performance options include extracting measures 1-10 to use as a brief introit. The anthem may be used in relation to the scripture lesson either before, between, or following. Appropriate days:
Christmas Eve, services in Christmastide, Lessons and Carols, and Epiphany.
