Communion Anthem for SATB voices and Piano; words by John Parker; music by Deborah Govenor - an anthem from Abingdon Press Choral Club volume 17.1 (Winter - Spring 2007)
Two simple stanzas illustrate the communion celebration. Images of hands waiting for bread and the cup held before us set the scene of this blessed ritual. Stanza 1 is set for divided voices, while stanza 2 opens with unison women followed by unison men. The refrain employs the title phrase as all seek to be nourished “with heaven’s fare.” The first and second refrains are nearly identical with only minute alterations in the voicing. The final refrain, measures 46 to the end, moves the key from D major to E major, sets voices unison until measure 52 where full chords complete the anthem.
The accompaniment provides a solid harmonic foundation, moves the left hand with broken chords, and offers added sonority to the vocal lines. An optional a cappella phrase, measures 20-21, includes piano cues if needed. The vocal parts may extend your basses with the E above the staff, but it occurs at a unison moment so the note will be covered by others.
Performance options include singing as a communion offertory as the table and elements are prepared. It may be sung during the serving of communion or as an independent anthem. Stanza 2 may be sung as two solos with the choir returning at the refrain. An A/P CD is available for this anthem - item # 0687335779.
