Listen...to the words of the Scripture, and in them discover God's message for you today.

Look...at a brief verbal snapshot from the scrapbook of contemporary life and discover its connection both to you and to the Scripture passage.

Live...inside the Scripture to discover its context and message; then allow the Scripture to come alive in you and cause you to live out your faith in new and more-effective ways.

--------------------------

Several years ago, my husband, Jeffrey, and I developed a lasting friendship with an Afghani refugee family. They had lost husband and father by assassination at the hands of the Taliban, a fundamentalist Muslim movement that accused Nazir Habibi of converting to Christianity. Although the language barrier challenged our conversation, we discovered that we all knew and loved the one God.

Mrs. Hawa Habibi, an expert in Islamic law and a former judge in her country, gladly accepted the gift of a Bible translated into Farsi. She read it from cover to cover. Her children watched as many films about Jesus as they could find. We studied Islam and asked dozens of questions. We invited our new friends to join us for Thanksgiving dinner.

My brother also joined us. Dean sustained brain damage at birth and functions at the level of a four-year-old, though he is now forty-six. He loves the Lord and shares his faith freely.

When it came time to give thanks before eating, we realized how diverse a gathering had assembled. An atheist, several agnostics, a non-practicing United Methodist, a recent immigrant from Ecuador, the son of a preacher, a Sunday school teacher, a pastor, a Spirit-filled retardate, and five Muslims sat at table together. Jeffrey, attempting to respect everyone’s beliefs, offered a generic table grace. Dean interrupted, giving thanks with spontaneous joy “in the name of Jesus Christ, the Son of the living God.” As soon as he finished, Mrs. Habibi broke in, deeply moved and praying in her native tongue. When she concluded, most said, “Amen.” A deep, transcending silence ensued.
