“Trust in the Lord” – General anthem for SATB voices (div.) and piano; words from Isaiah 26:2-4, and music by Brian Childers
Setting the tone for the entire work, the men proclaim “Open the gates!” much like the prophet Isaiah. The unison male voicing quickly moves to an effective, but easily sung TTBB divisi . The women enter next, in a soft unison with a quiet, but lush divisi of voices as they proclaim “peace.” Finally, the entire ensemble sings the enduring text by Isaiah. Composer Brian Childers surprises singers and listeners as he adds a simple moving eighth note piano score to under gird the choir as they continue singing in unison. Once again Childers uses his gift of lush harmonies as he encourages us to “trust in the Lord forever” in the final section of the anthem.
Pianists may want to softly double the a cappella choral parts as needed. Consider fingering and phrasing when playing the moving thirds in the right hand. Another option is to ask another keyboardist to play the choral parts on a soft flute stop on the organ.
Performance options include using the a cappella opening (measures 1-36) as a response in worship. Also consider using ms. 37- 56 (adjusting the piano score at the end of ms. 56) as a response to prayer.
