By Robert Sterling
O Come, Emmanuel is an exceptional 6-minute Christmas musical drama by the acclaimed composer, Robert Sterling. Designed to be incorporated into Christmas worship or within a Christmas service or concert, it is the perfect alternative to much longer cantatas.
Singing the traditional advent hymn, O Come, O Come Emmanuel, the musical opens with the longing, quiet expectation of a world awaiting a savior. Then we hear the proclamation that the Lord “has come and redeemed His People.” The choir jubilantly responds with Come, Thou Long Expected Jesus. The narrator tells us of the angel appearing to the shepherds, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy!” A soloist then sings the traditional, beloved carol, The First Noel, and the choir joins at the end of the verse. The musical concludes with the glorious and soaring carol, Angel’s We Have Heard on High.
