A beautiful All Saints Day anthem, “Come, Let Us Join Our Friends Above” is based on a Sacred Harp hymn capturing the open harmonies, solid beat, and spirited text. Unison women present stanza 1, briefly joined by the full choir at measures 25-32 as “all the saints” sing. A recurring interlude hints at the LAND OF REST tune; marked “freely,” it transitions into stanza 2. Unison men take the melody as women provide background harmony, occasionally interjecting text. As in stanza 1, the middle phrase interrupts the formula briefly using traditional four-part voicing, then completes the stanza as it began. An interlude and modulation lead to the final stanza, set for unison choir and descant.
The voice parts are low to medium and rhythms follow the Sacred Harp style. The anthem can be taught with ease and learned quickly. The accompaniment supports the voices, capturing the melody and adding rhythm and color.
PERFORMANCE OPTIONS include the use of a soloist in stanza 1 on the women’s part with the full choir entering as marked. You may also add the congregation on the final stanza melody.
