Message on back panel reads:
Portals, doorways, gates, thresholds, vestibules – there are many words that describe entryways. Through them we go from one place or situation to another. We may emerge from a dark cave into bright light or move from cold, threatening surroundings to ones that provide warmth and security.
Advent is such an entryway. Occurring right after the season of harvest and thanksgiving, it marks the beginning of a new “Christian Year.” The past year may have brought us both joy and sorrow, success and failure. We end it, giving thanks for the strength that carried us through. We are grateful for what we have learned and for what we still have as the year comes to a close.
What lies ahead? Our cover picture and our faith remind us that, whatever entryway we pass through, we are in God’s care and protection. In all the corners of our lives an angel watches over us. Beyond the entryway shines a beckoning light. We know about this bright star in the heavens, because we have gone through other gates, lived through other Christmas seasons. Will this one offer anything new?
We serve a God who makes everything new. We know that God loved the people of creation from the very beginning. Years before Christ’s coming, a Psalm writer spoke of God as a shepherd, who led him into green pastures, beside still waters and who accompanied him through death’s dark valley. But Jesus made it all new, more real, more tangible. Advent is a time when we see God’s promise fulfilled, filled fully.
The portal, the entryway, stands before us. Beyond it is a great promise. Walk through the gate and find fulfillment. Share generously with those around you, so that they, too, may move forward and find a new, brighter future.
