BURST GREEN CHURCH LEADERS GUIDE (download)
Short-term youth group programming on provocative subjects.
Burst: Green Church deals with care for creation and environmental stewardship. It teaches youth that caring for the environment—reducing waste, using less water and energy, making responsible use of resources, and so on—is an act of faith.
Burst: Green Church teaches the “6 Rs.” They are:
- Repent
- Reclaim
- Reduce
- Reuse
- Recycle
- Rejoice
This structure is based on the work of Rev. Rebekah Simon-Peter, the author of Seven Simple Steps to Green Your Church, who is an environmental scientist/naturalist-turned-UM elder and who has traveled the country helping congregations go green. Tim Gossett is the writer of this study for youth and has been a leading voice in the green church movement among youth ministers and Christian educators.
Sessions involve provocative discussion starters, experiential learning activities, games, snacks, and options for breaking into small groups.
This short-term study includes 4 weeks worth of material and is ideal for Sunday school or Wednesday night youth group. Components include a Leader's Guide, a package of five pocket-sized student booklets (sold separately), and a Web-based resource (www.Burst.AbingdonYouth.com) providing articles, fact sheets, handouts, and links to other relevant Web resources.
