“I have much more to say to you, but you can’t handle it now. However, when the Spirit of Truth comes, he will guide you in all truth. "
John 16:12-15 - (Common English Bible)
Candles from Cokesbury

Did you know that candles burning on an altar symbolize the presence of Christ on the altar? The wax is regarded as His body; the wick, encompassed by the wax represents His soul; the flame symbolizes His divinity. Few objects equal the candle’s long history of association with religious observances. The candle’s function is unique, as it serves in a simple, yet significant, way to remind us of the thought expressed by the words “The Lord is my Light and my salvation; whom shall I fear.”

Advent/Christmas candles remind us of the time leading up to the birth of Christ and offer the congregation a means to participate in the preparation. They can also be a special way to bring family members together with devotions in the home. Advent candle sets consist of four candles representing Peace, Joy, Love, and Hope. The purple candles represent penance and longing; the pink candle represents the joy in the expectation of the birth of Christ. Blue candles may be used in place of purple candles; it is a matter of preference.

The candlelight service focuses on the profound intimacy of tender humanity and the mystery of the Nativity, with lights shining in the darkness in preparation for Christ’s birth. Candles are given to each member of the congregation during the candlelight service, drawing the participants closer together. The most popular times for candlelight services are Christmas Eve and Easter Vigil.

Sanctuary candles are used in sanctuary lamps and burn for a specific number of days depending on the candle purchased. These candles can enhance the beauty of the sanctuary while recognizing the presence of Christ on the altar.

Special occasion candles are used for Baptism, Christening, Confirmation, and Communion.

Paschal or Easter candles symbolize our Lord’s glorious Easter triumph over the darkness of death and sin. It is lighted for all services during the Easter season. The candle remains on the altar throughout the year and is used at baptisms and funerals.

Tenebrae is a candlelight service of extended meditation on the passion of Christ. It may be used following Holy Communion on Holy Thursday or during the evening service on Good Friday, particularly as the beginning of a prayer vigil lasting through Saturday. Votive candles and tea lights

are excellent for prayer vigils, All Saints’ Day, and In Remembrance services.

Altar candles are burned during the liturgy or Sunday service, placed in candelabra or candlesticks upon or adjacent to the altar. Candles are a sign of reverence and festiveness.

Types of Candles

When you mention candles, most people will think of a tallow candle. Tallow is the most common and most often used material for making candles. However, Cokesbury also offers quality beeswax candles and liquid candles. Beeswax candles are almost smokeless and burn slower than traditional tallow candles, thereby lasting longer. If liquid candles are your choice, we offer both disposable liquid candles and candles with cartridges. Liquid candles burn clean and there is no messy dripping.
